Hamsters are generally hardy pets, but they can still suffer from various health problems. Knowing the common warning signs helps you spot trouble early and get your hamster to a vet in time. Hamsters hide illness well and can go downhill quickly, so if you notice any of the symptoms below, contact a vet who treats small animals as soon as possible.

1. Wet Tail (Proliferative Ileitis)

Symptoms: severe diarrhoea, lethargy, loss of appetite, wetness around the tail and rear end.

Causes: Wet tail is often linked to stress, poor diet, or unsanitary living conditions, and is most common in young hamsters. It’s a serious condition that needs a vet the same day.

Treatment: Antibiotics and fluids prescribed by a vet, plus a quiet, warm, clean enclosure while your hamster recovers.

2. Respiratory Infections

Symptoms: sneezing, runny nose, laboured or noisy breathing, discharge from the eyes or nose.

Causes: Draughts, sudden temperature changes, dusty or scented bedding, and ammonia from a dirty toilet corner.

Treatment: A vet may prescribe antibiotics. At home, keep the enclosure away from draughts and use dust-free, unscented paper bedding.

3. Dental Problems

Symptoms: difficulty eating, weight loss, drooling, overgrown or misaligned teeth.

Causes: Hamsters’ teeth grow continuously, so they need to chew regularly to keep them worn down. A lack of chewing materials or a misaligned bite can lead to overgrown teeth.

Treatment: Provide plenty of safe, untreated wooden chews. If the teeth are already overgrown, a vet may need to trim them. Never try this yourself.

4. Skin Issues

Symptoms: hair loss, itching and scratching, red or inflamed skin, scabs or sores.

Causes: Mites, allergies, fungal infections, or stress. Some hair loss can also be linked to hormones or age.

Treatment: A vet needs to find the cause first. Only use sprays, shampoos or creams that your vet has prescribed, as many products for other pets are unsafe for hamsters.

5. Digestive Problems

Symptoms: diarrhoea, constipation, bloated abdomen, lack of appetite.

Causes: Poor diet, sudden dietary changes, too much fresh food at once, or eating something toxic.

Treatment: A balanced hamster food, fresh foods introduced slowly and in small amounts, and constant access to fresh water. See a vet if symptoms last more than a day. For everyday feeding, see what hamsters should eat and safe plants for hamsters.

6. Eye Problems

Symptoms: cloudy or swollen eyes, discharge or crustiness, squinting or pawing at the eyes.

Causes: Infections, injuries, dusty bedding or congenital conditions.

Treatment: A vet will examine the eye and may prescribe drops. Keeping bedding dust-free helps prevent problems.

7. Lumps, Tumours and Cancer

Symptoms: lumps or bumps under the skin, weight loss, lethargy, changes in behaviour.

Causes: Tumours can be benign or malignant and are more common in older hamsters. Some lumps are abscesses, which also need treatment.

Treatment: Any new lump should be checked by a vet. Early detection gives more options, including surgery.

Final Thoughts

A quick daily look at your hamster (eating, drinking, moving normally, clean eyes and bottom) is the best way to catch problems early. A large enclosure with deep, clean bedding, a balanced diet and gentle handling prevent many of these issues in the first place.
